The D-League Trains Their Referees?!
Our Main Man D-Reed writes a bit about the D-League referees. Lots of interesting stuff in it, so I'm just going to direct you over there. They do have a Director of Officials, so that's positive.
Now that it seems they have reformed the one and only Marat Kogut, I'm going to ask the D-League to look at little Ben Taylor, Nick Buchert, and Scott Twardowski - immediately.
Also, give Kevin Cutler, Will Mensah, Haywoode Workman, and George McDaniels a raise. Especially McDaniels and Mensah. They're consistently paired with a terrible crew.
Sincerely,
Ridiculous Scott

The weakest link...
When the Idaho Stampede hopped over to the D-League I felt that the biggest issue of the “entire” program was game officiating. I thought it was much improved last season (maybe because the calls were going the way of the D-League champs) but I think it has slipped again this season.
I can live with the occasional bad or blown calls (see Stamps v. Vipers in OT). I have more trouble with inconsistency, which rears it’s head from time to time but I can mentally write off as the inexperienced learning on the job (which is the definition of development).
However what REALLY gets me going are those refs that a) attempt to make every call when they aren’t in position to do so and b) those that go out of their way to antagonize players and coaches.
I don’t spend my money to see the refs. PERIOD. They should get in position, call what is front of them, work as a unit, be as consistent/fair as possible and keep it under control. If someone deserves to get run – run them as the last resort and be done with it.
Of course from Cuban to the Sports Guy this is common theme in the Association as well…so I don’t hold my breath.
You can tell that some of these young guns get caught up in the ego of the position and playing into what they think the official pooh-bahs of the NBA want. What the pooh-bahs want is what I want – a smooth game where the results are based on the execution of those playing it.

Perfect
I disagree with none of this post, but especiallly agree with this:
You can tell that some of these young guns get caught up in the ego
Exactly. Notice the three refs I mentioned are either very young or look very young. Kogut is another example of what seems a big head because he’s a D-League official (HE MADE THE ALL-STAR GAME!!!), but lately I haven’t noticed as many issues with his calling of games. I haven’t seen him live in a minute though, so we’ll have to see.
Ridiculous? I think Not.
Upside? Plenty.

Reffing
It doesn’t matter what level of basketball it is no one is ever happy with the officiating. Basketball is the fastest paced sport around and because everything happens so fast and we have so many instant replays we can see their mistakes. I have reffed games and needless to say it is hard.
So no matter who you bring in, people will always complain about them regardless. There is no love for the basketball ref and that’s a fact.

This much is true
But certain officials can be singled out, there’s a problem..
