(Late) Sunday News From Around the D-/Summer League
Now with actual bullets format!
- With the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals, there have been several profiles about coach George Karl. Here's one about him and his son, D-Leaguer Coby Karl.
- Ersan Ilyasova's name came up in our 2005 Second Round Re-draft, and it looks like he could be making his way to the NBA next year with the Milwaukee Bucks (who drafted him for real).
- Someone really likes Boston Celtic and D-Leaguer Bill Walker. Partly because Walker got into a fight with Tracy McGrady.
- The Clippers are expected to have Al Thornton, Eric Gordon, DeAndre Jordan and...Blake Griffin on their Summer League team. They're also talking to Sofoklis Schortsanitis, last discussed here. (I knew these re-drafts were a good idea)
- As much as we like to see D-League guys get chances here at RU, sometimes the situation's just not right. Agent Bill Neff seems to agree, as he's declined the Utah Jazz's offer for Demetris Nichols to play with their Summer League team.
- Apparently making the NBA is tough, even for athletes from Tennessee. Derrick Byars will be at Summer League again this year, and it looks like former Vanderbilt star Shan Foster will be as well.
- Attention, Springfieldians! The new franchise will be holding an open house on June 3. Not attending: the team mascot, coach or players, because they don't have any.
- You've probably heard by now, but the Minnesota Timberwolves finally hired former D-League owner David Kahn as their GM. Here's a look back at Scott's thoughts. (Scott really needs a newspaper column called "Scott's Thoughts")
- The Australian national team may be participating in the 2010 Summer League. Expect a tearful reunion between Scott and Luke Schenscher.
- Finally, in honor of the defunct Bakersfield Jam (or something): I know it's fashionable to call a song you like "your jam." Well, here's one of probably my top 5 jams.

My little boy's grown up....
using real bullets, making a Luke Schenscher/Scott burn, adding a youtube link of Bjork…..there is so much to be proud of here. Excellent work.
Hey Don't forget Mike T running the point...
for the LA Clippers summer team. 2009 summer league champs?
Theoretically
The Clips should be a very good team next year. If they trade Kaman or Randolph for an expiring contract and a pick or something along those lines (only the knicks would do this), they have the look of a very good basketball team. They’ve always been talented, but combining youth and experience next season, it looks like (hold your breath) the management is starting to figure things out (…..and release). Lineup:
PG: Baron Davis
SG: Eric Gordon
SF: Al Thornton
PF: Blake Griffin
C: Marcus Camby
BENCH: Zach Randolph or Chris Kaman, Mike Taylor (what’s up Stampede?), Ricky Davis (if he hangs around), and former temple owl Mardy Collins.
This will of course be the butt of jokes come December, when Camby and Davis are out for the season and Randolph is taking 45 shots a game. But I think it would be even worse not to suggest the Clippers have RIDICULOUS UPSIDE. (nice)

Is that the most overpaid bench in basketball with $26 million sitting on it (Z-Bo and Kaman/Camby)?
If I was running the Clips, I would either take Rubio directly or ideally let someone else pay me to get Griffin and then rebuild around Rubio and Gordon. Z-Bo is untradable except for crap, whereas the Warriors are rumored to be interested to take back Baron Davis. Or he could be moved at the deadline to a team that figures out they need help at the point (Dallas?).
So I would ask OKC to give me their other 2009 pick, next year’s Phoenix pick that they own, and Rubio (if he drops to them because Wallace is really dumb enough to think Marc Gasol should chase PFs around the perimeter so he can take Thabeet) for Griffin. Griffin goes to the team he wants to go to and becomes a homestate hero. Rubio goes at least to the city he wants to go to.
