Sorting Out the Team Affiliations

Well, it's been an exciting couple of days, hasn't it?  (Say yes.)  Houston announced that they're taking control of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Springfield team has a name, and all that on top of the announcement that the Dallas Mavericks effectively bought the Colorado 14ers franchise.  After all that, you must be asking, "so...who is affiliated with whom?"  I compliment you on your grammar, and tell you not to worry, for I have the answer to that.

After the jump, a list of the new NBA/D-League affiliations and notes on any changes to them that I could see/remember.  For Scott's thoughts, check the Bismarck Tribune.

Star-divide

Albuquerque Thunderbirds - Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Hornets (added Hornets, apparently won't be shutting down)

Austin Toros - San Antonio Spurs (no change)

Bakersfield Jam - Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers (added Clippers, lost Orlando)

Dakota Wizards - Memphis Grizzlies, Washington Wizards (no change)

Erie BayHawks - Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors (added Toronto, lost 76ers)

Fort Wayne Mad Ants - Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks (no change)

Idaho Stampede - Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers (added Nuggets, lost Toronto)

Iowa Energy - Chicago Bulls, Phoenix Suns (no change)

Los Angeles D-Fenders - Los Angeles Lakers (no change, still have Sun Yue)

Maine Red Claws - Boston Celtics, Charlotte Bobcats (both new, because it's a new franchise)

Reno Bighorns - Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings (added Orlando, lost Knicks)

Rio Grande Valley Vipers - Houston Rockets (lost Hornets)

Sioux Falls Skyforce - Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves (added Miami, lost Charlotte)

Springfield Armor - New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers (new franchise, so all new)

Tulsa 66ers - Oklahoma City Thunder (no change)

Utah Flash - Atlanta Hawks, Utah Jazz (added Hawks, lost Boston)

D-League did a good job this year with Affiliations

All the NBA teams are pretty close to their D-League franchises except the Southeast teams. Teams won’t be afraid to send players down if it’s the next state over. i still don’t understand why the Thunderbirds are not affiliated with the Suns that seems to make alot of sense. I also thinks Dakota should be with the T’Wolves and the Bucks should be with Sioux Falls.

Dropping 76er's

This is good for Erie. Maybe the Raptors will get involved with the Bayhawks in some way. I’m not sure Philadelphia even realized they were affiliated with Erie.

That was my thought as well

and I was kind of surprised to see an article in which Erie was lamenting that their neighbor/probably division rival (Springfield) has three teams to their two. Their argument was that more NBA affiliations means more assignees and a stronger roster, but neither the Nets nor the 76ers seem anxious to use the D-League, whereas both the Cavaliers and the Raptors have at least shown some interest.

Yeah I think you're right

given the assigning rate of the affiliated franchises, I’d say Erie and Springfield are pretty evenly matched.

I think I was the only one who realized

I sent a few letters to the front office, but no luck. Crossing my fingers that SOMEBODY gets sent down this year. Maybe its Dalembert, that would be wonderful.

Toronto is rumored to be a great francise to work with...

…or so I hear from the Stampede grapevine. Anxious and eager to assist on everything.

As for Idaho, if a relationship with George Karl (ex-Stamps owner and Koby’s daddy) can’t help then we are going to have to buy our own NBA team and park it in Twin Falls…

I agree

I liked the Pennsylvania partnership we had with Philadelphia, but there weren’t any indications that they were going to get more involved than last year, and geographically it makes sense. As someone who’s made both drives from Erie, the drive to Toronto is much more manageable than Philadelphia. The foreign element may complicate that a bit, but I still think that, all in all, the relationship with the Raptors will benefit the BayHawks more than the 76ers one did.

I hate our affiliates

Washington sucks.. they’ve never given us a player and with only one eligible player who won’t even be sent down, that’s not changing this year.

I want Hasheem Thabeet to be sent down.. too bad that’s not going to happen.

will the warriors be affiliated with the new frisco team?

by FANofDUBS on Jun 30, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd doubt it

at least if the Bakersfield team is still around, anyway. I guess we’ll have to wait a year and see.

So

the Flash lose Boston & Atlanta. Do the Hawks use the D-League a lot?

Do the Hawks ever draft or develop players correctly?

Well, they had...

um…
Acie Law? No, scratch that.
Shelden Williams? No, never mind.
Marvin Williams? He’s kinda worked out…
Al Horford. There we go, I got one!

Horford did it on his own....

he had no help. If anything the Hawks organization was dragging him down.

Hawks

They assigned a couple players last year, but it was for a very short stint, right around the showcase

That's depressing

I guess all the Flash will be getting is Goran Suton…

Wait

Don’t the Jazz like storing good second half of the first round picks that were good in college but didn’t go to a major school in the D-League?

Almond

no longer on the Jazz.
And Eric Maynor will probably be the back-up this year, so he can’t be sent down.
And The Koof will stick with the Jazz as well, I think

I know

I was just saying, don’t count out the Jazz to draft someone and then kill his career in the D-League.
