The 17 year-old center/power forward billed as the next great big man out of Turkey after Mehmet Okur "signed" with renowned Findlay College Prep, Nevada, instead of taking a contract with one of the major European teams hoping to make millions soon. He might even go to college in the US. It's a weird world.

He is coming off a very strong showing in the Under 18 European Championships, including a 32 points 25 rebounds performance in a loss to France in the final and averaging 15 rebounds per game. YouTube highlights vs. Serbia (he is #14). DraftExpress profile (he has grown since then, is now 6'10'' but still has to add some muscle).

Wow

Checking out this “school”, it seems like they’re pretty much a basketball factory. I’d really like to know the founder Cliff Findlay, as he seems to solely exist to help basketball players (Other major venture is Findlay Toyota, sponsor of the NBA Summer League and place of work for Ed O’Bannon.)

It makes me wonder – why didn’t Jeremy Tyler go this route? He was the best player in San Diego, apparently, but if he would have went somewhere like Findlay or Oak Hill, surely there would’ve been some competition… Right?

No longer full-time blogging at Ridiculous Upside, but still go check them out since I made them. Kind of.

Obviously Kanter is not looking to raise his grades in math to get into an Ivy League school, he chose that academy to prep for college and/or his pro career. He probably figures he gets playing time, good stats, and solid development coaching that he might not see at a European senior pro team. And yeah, that could have been an option for Tyler. Dominating San Diego is nice, state and national high school competition might have challenged him more. Will be interesting to see which path will lead to a better draft position in 2011 or so.
