There are guys who are kinda not realistic about your game at a D-League level. You can almost just go up to the guy and go, you gotta be kidding, you know? You go ahead and do that, but I'm gonna be honest with you and tell you that there's a time in your life when you gotta make a decision and do something else. A lot of these guys are trying to chase a dream, or maybe just coming out here for fun.
It's like American Idol, you know? And I'm thinking, you're delusional.
The above quote is from Erie BayHawks assistant coach Ben McDonald spouting some knowledge regarding the majority of the players that show up at D-League open tryouts (via Deadspin).

Everytime I see you write about theses tryouts the open tryout scene from Invincible pops into my head.
Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

This is the second time I've read about personnel from Erie
“complaining” about the talent quality at open try-outs. They are open try-outs!
If the team has no problem accepting the $250 check from them to walk in the door, then don’t bash the guys for trying to make it. Of course better-level talent usually already have jobs or agents trying to get them jobs, thus the need not to attend an open-tryout.
If I was a player I would be complaining about a team letting 50-75 players pay $250 for the chance to earn a chance to make 1-3 open roster spots. Also, don’t complain about the “small D-league” budgets (NY Times article) like it’s something unique to the D-League. The history of minor league sports has always been about small budgets.
The D-League is like the Maybach of basketball compared to the ABA or CBA/USBL in the past.
And it turns out
the comments were from the same try-out at Baruch college. But for the video coordinator, assistant coach and head coach to have this negative attitude towards the players trying out, its not productive.
I think it was obvious to everyone in the gym, at the school in the city, in the country, etc…that the guys trying out were not on the same level as the Lakers or Raptors…way to state the obvious coach!

This guy would probably really lose his mind if he saw the guys trying out for Arena Football

One of the guys on my flag football team went down and played for an Arena Football (I think it was AF2) team this year after attending a tryout. He’s probably the best player in our league, but it really made me wonder who showed up for that tryout.
That said, I’ve seen some pretty terrible players at D-League tryouts in the past, too.
I write about basketball players with Ridiculous Upside. I know you'll love it.
