The Memphis Grizzlies and Iowa Energy have jointly announced that Nicki Gross, a video coordinator for the minor league affiliate last season, has been promoted to an assistant coaching position. She becomes the lone female assistant coach in the NBA D-League.
Such a hire obviously follows Becky Hammon's success while leading the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Summer League title, but it is in no way because of it. Having just completed her first season with the Energy, Gross was also assistant video coordinator for the Bakersfield Jam during the 2013-14 season as well. She's been on the D-League radar, gaining popularity across the circuit, for quite a while now.
"I am very excited to promote Nicki within our staff as she becomes the only female assistant coach in the NBA D-League," said Energy Head Coach Bob Donewald in a statement. "Nicki joined our franchise last season as video coordinator and did an outstanding job in helping the team prepare for each game. She is a tireless worker who has a bright future in basketball."
Gross is widely regarded as one of the minor league's up and coming stars behind the scenes. Her work ethic and dedication to her craft (and the game of basketball) isn't matched by many. She's continued her rise to prominence, all the while assisting the Samsung NBA Summer League staff for the last three summers as well.
This latest promotion is well deserved.
