The NBA G League has grown tremendously in the past five seasons. Nine teams have joined the league and the New Orleans Pelicans will be the next team to set up shop in the developmental league for the 2019-20 season. While the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers don’t have an affiliate yet, there are talks about a 29th team joining the NBAGL.

Commissioner Adam Silver discussed the possibly of bringing a G League team to Mexico City and his time frame on when he sees that happening.

A few bullet points from Silver’s comments included the NBA is interested in bringing a G League team to Mexico City and an announcement could be coming in the near future. That in itself shows how the G League is continuing to grow and is branching out of the United States and Canada. Silver noted how it will add another spark of interest in NBA basketball in Mexico City.

There has been discussions with Mexico City and the league has been involved with their partner, Televisia. Adding a G League team will be a precursor to bringing an NBA team to Mexico City. With an announcement expected in the coming weeks, more eyeballs should stay on the growth of the G League as it continues to inch closer to their 30-for-30 model. Or in this case, 31 teams with the possible addition of a non-affiliated Mexico City team.
