It was a memorable season for Billy Garrett. After a successful rookie season with the Westchester Knicks, he joined the New York Knicks for Summer League. He said he was thankful the team gave him a chance to return and jumped on the opportunity as soon as he could.
Garrett played a significant role in Westchester’s success during the 2018-19 season. Whether he was coming off the bench or leading the point in the starting unit, he was a productive contributor. He showed he could come up in clutch moments and had some crucial defensive moments where he controlled an opposing offensive player. Even when Garrett missed shots, he would use his hustle and energy on the defensive end to force turnovers.
As the season progressed, Garrett’s play went to another level. He was playing some great basketball, which resulted in Garrett being in the discussion for an NBA call-up. He had a stretch of games where he scored 20-plus points in nine games of ten games. The second-year guard was getting the team involved as the main facilitator, while being active on the defensive end. He was named the NBA G League Player of the Week and became the third Westchester Knick to earn that award.
When Westchester’s season came to an end, Billy Garrett inked his name into the franchise’s record book. He was at No. 1 in most total games played (101) & most points scored (1,437) and second in total assists (314).
Garrett’s second season wasn’t over just yet. Four days after Westchester’s postseason loss, the New York Knicks signed Garrett for the remainder of the season. He made his NBA debut on April 3 where he recorded four points and two assists in 11 minutes off the bench. He played in four of the Knicks’ final five games and had one of his better games against the Chicago Bulls (eight points, two assists and two rebounds).
