Before the 2018-19 season started, the Capital City Go-Go selected Stephen Zimmerman in the 2018 G League Expansion Draft. He was acquired by the Westchester Knicks and was a solid contributor in the team’s frontcourt. He played with good energy, attacked the glass, and was an efficient scorer. He did most of his damage in the paint and his teammates could set him up to score the ball.
Zimmerman had a good stretch of games in December where he scored in double figures in seven of eight games, while grabbing eight-plus rebounds in four of those games. The 6’11” big man saw his defensive game grow the most during the first half of the season.
“Probably defensive I’ve seen my game grow more,” Zimmerman said in January. “Getting comfortable with my teammates and trusting them more. Just being in the right place at the right time. Coach DA (Derrick Alston) and Bogs (Keith Bogans) and Coach (Mike) Miller have helped me out with that.”
Zimmerman was pulling rebounds down left and right on Mar. 11 against the Delaware Blue Coats. His 20 rebounds wasn’t a career high, but his name will be in Westchester’s franchise record book due to his incredible rebounding performance.
In February, Zimmerman competed with the USA Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team in February. He said it was fun playing on the team, along with his love of putting on the Team USA jersey.
The third-year center finished out the season by posting some of his best numbers of the season. He was in a good rhythm offensively where he posted his season high 23 points on March 2 and recorded three double-doubles in six games. He averaged 12.0 points, 12.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in March.
