In the build up to each NBA G League season, most teams local tryouts to give players an opportunity to make a training camp roster. Whether they’re weekend warriors that kill it against their friends or former college standouts that are looking for a chance to stay in the States, this process has produced mixed results. Because in a lot of cases, the prospects that excel and make it to training camp end up getting cut before the regular season begins.
In recent years, there have been a lot of training camp participants that have gone on to achieve G League or NBA success. The most recent story is current Golden State Warriors forward Alfonzo McKinnie, who parlayed a tryout with the Windy City to start his journey to the NBA. More recently, prospects like Billy Garrett, Retin Obahasan and Juan Toscano-Anderson have been able to go from tryout participants to standing as very solid G Leaguers.
If you’re looking to follow in the footsteps of those players, there might be an opportunity for you as most G League teams will hold tryouts in August or September.
