NBA Mock Draft Pick #24 — Grayson Allen, Guard, Duke
SB Nation’s Brooklyn Nets blog Nets Daily explains the pick:
Grayson Allen is a divisive figure in basketball. He has a reputation as a “dirty player” and his emotional outburst two years ago after being tagged with a technical for tripping an Elon player was seen as a prima facie example of his immaturity. We didn’t see it that way. We saw it as an example that Grayson Allen wants to win, wants to be great. The Nets have a good guy culture and that’s terrific, but they could also use someone who’s a bit of, dare we say it, a jerk.
He also is a good basketball player, a very good basketball player with an NCAA championship and a lot of big moments in his four years at Duke. He is also a hell of an athlete, with a 40” max vertical to go with his 7’0” wingspan. He has wowed NBA executives in interviews with his maturity and intelligence -- he was Academic All-American after all.
That’s not say he’s all humble. After he blew up the measurement portion of the Combine, he was asked to compare himself with J.J. Redick, a Duke alumnus and his mentor.
”I don’t think J.J. jumped 40 inches,” he said with a smile.
