After failing to come to an agreement with the New Orleans Pelicans, the Los Angeles Lakers will select Vanderbilt’s Darius Garland with the No. 4 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Jarrett Culver was seriously considered here, especially after his strong workout with the Lakers earlier this month, but Garland’s upside as a go-to, three-level scorer at the point guard position was ultimately too much to pass on. While there are legitimate concerns about who he will guard at the next level, the Lakers have the personnel to hide him on defense in the immediate future. In the meantime, Garland will have the opportunity to carve out minutes in head coach Frank Vogel’s rotation by knocking down 3-pointers with consistency. Anything he provides beyond that is just gravy.
