Travis Diener To Sign With Portland Trail Blazers; Takes Our Jobs
Typically NBA roster moves go unreported here at your favorite D-League hangout.
Typically they don't involve Travis Diener taking a Portland Trail Blazers job (reported by Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter) that I'd all but anointed as Will Conroy's next NBA stop.
I know, I know, it's their 15th man, it doesn't really matter. But it does matter. It's still real to me, dammit! And on that same note, since it's the 15th man, would it have been so bad to give a local kid busting his ass in the D-League a chance?
Seriously, though. In the month of February (five games due to a call-up with Houston and the all-star break), Will Conroy AVERAGED A TRIPLE-DOUBLE with 19.6 points, 14 assists and 10.4 rebounds while shooting 66% from the field and 53% from beyond the arc.
And before you come back with a 'Well, I'm sure Diener could do that in the D-League' I'd like to point out that Diener has played in just four games this season, averaging a sparkling .8 points, 1 assist, and 0 turnovers in 6.3 minutes per game. He last saw game action on February 6th against the Detroit Pistons. Diener has battled a toe injury that required surgery in November.
He took our job. With the likes of Mark Blount and Michael Finley also being bought out today, you may as well plan for at least two more of these posts.
For more reasonable analysis, please check out BlazersEdge. Ben is much more optimistic about this move than I am.
Oh, last note. I checked with Google. Searching "Travis Diener sucks" brought back nine results. The same search with Will Conroy inserted brought back ZERO results. So there's that.

True
Because it’s fairly easy to get a gauge on how good a player is if you’ve watched him play 21 minutes of garbage time.

The Blazers kind of already have that problem with Patty Mills, who they could only observe in training and the DL and garbage time
Apparently they have decided that they won’t risk to roll with him and Bayless as the only PG options.

Yeah
I’m sure it was much easier to evaluate Diener’s recovery after injury in his 25 minutes of NBA action. His 17% from the field this season also probably looked pretty stellar.

As a diehard UW Huskies fan and casual Portland Trail Blazers observer, I'd've chosen Will ...
Conroy for Portland’s open roster spot over Travis Diener. Conroy, who’s main flaw coming out of college was his lack of three-point range, has improved his long-distance shooting efficiency throughout his D-League career. In addition, Conroy is a solid one-on-one perimeter defender — which is the main reason why he was compared to Eric Snow by the staff at DraftExpress.com — so the Trail Blazers could’ve really used his presence on both ends of the court.
Apparently, though, the Trail Blazers brain trust — which is a term that I use loosely — went with Diener over Conroy for two main reasons. For starters, Diener is a low-usage floor spreader at the 1 on offense — while Conroy is more of a medium-usage floor general — plus, he’s careful with the rock and, as a result, commits few turnovers. Diener, in essence, is a homeless man’s version of Steve Blake, albeit a shorter version who’s even more god-awful/piss-poor at defense.
As it is, Nate McMillan gets a proverbial hard-on for dudes who play off the ball on offense at the 1; thus, a dribble-drive gunner in Jerryd Bayless — who, in all reality, is an undersized shooting guard — and a waterbug chucker in Patty Mills didn’t cut the mustard in his eyes. Oh, and even though I agree that both Bayless and Mills are fatally flawed players, Diener still isn’t the answer.
Ugh, it’s too bad that Kevin Pritchard didn’t pull the trigger for Kirk Hinrich either this season or last season. A healthy Hinrich would’ve solved all the Trail Blazers on-court problems at the 1 — both offensively and defensively, with the latter being of the utmost importance alongside a defensive sieve like Brandon Roy — yet, it wasn’t meant to be for whatever dumbass reason.
Yet, since getting Hinrich last month as a long-term solution wasn’t in the cards, the right short-term option was to sign Conroy to a ten-day contract. Alas, Conroy isn’t a stylistic fit in the rigid mind of McMillan. Oh well, there isn’t anything that I can do about it—except bitch and moan as a cathartic release.

It's Still Real to Me - Dammit!!
Talk to Carlos Powell and Diamon Simpson about busting their asses out of town for some caaaaash money in China and the Phillipines, respectively. The exodus is just beginning (but Mr. Reed and Write still talks about the 120 callups over the years in his commercials). The top line DLeague players are seeing the light and going where maybe they should have gone in the first place. Minimum wage just doesn’t keep the bills paid.

It's March
If you’ve done enough to firmly be on the NBA radar for next season, it’s probably time to get paid.
Simpson is never going to be a call-up guy (though he could easily play his way onto an NBA roster via Summer League/preseason) and Powell already knows he’s going to an NBA camp.
Still, if you want to get to the NBA in-season, the only way to do it is by playing in the D-League. All about priorities.

Terry Funk rocks!
Terry Funk is so tough he could play in the D-League today with little to no basketball experience. BTW I am just assuming your “It’s still real to me - Dammit” link is the youtube clip of an overemotional wrestling fan talking to Terry Funk at a pro wrestling convention Q&A without actually clicking the link.

Agreed
I would Terry Funk at the top of my call-up candidates. And I’d probably put Chainsaw Charlie at 3. And I’d include his character from Road House at number 7.

Diener
Blazers wanted someone with proven NBA experience.
Mills and Conroy haven’t had a chance to prove how well they can play in the NBA. Diener has, he has proven that he can’t do jack squat.
So of course the Blazers go with the guy who’s proven.

Yeah
And that’s what annoys me. At least give Patty Mills a chance if you’re going to go with a bad retread.. Saves money if nothing else.

I like Patty Mills
But I’d prefer Will Conroy to run my team over him. Though I’d like Patty Mills just fine if he was already on my team.

Travis Diener blows. There are plenty of point guards in the D-League who can shoot the three.
Plus, they play defense and are actually good at it. Diener? Not so much. ’Ol well.

Trail Blazers would be lucky!
Travis Diener is an incredible basketball player when he healthy. Hopefully, he will be better soon. He is basketball smart, sees the floor, and hits the 3.
Also, he is a quality guy who does a lot of good for the community. I really hope fans will give him a chance out there and save their bad attitudes for the rest of the team, which, incidentally, is not that great.
