NBA Mock Draft Pick #6 — Mohamed Bamba, Forward, University of Texas
SBNation’s Orlando Magic blog Orlando Pinstriped Post explains the pick:
With a lot of needs, taking Mohamed Bamba makes a lot of sense for the Magic. Yes, they have a glaring hole at point guard, and Trae Young was available, but Young’s shortcomings defensively are an issue. Bamba, who holds a massive 7-foot-9 wingspan, has the potential to be a prototypical rim protector. Add in his mobility, and the Texas product could be a real terror on the defensive end for years to come. He has some work to do offensively, but he can space the floor some, and could be an extremely strong roll man in the pick-and-roll. He might not be the “splashy” and “exciting” move many fans would want, but he’s the best option here. He also fits into the profile of what the front office combo of Jeff Weltman and John Hammond tend to like. Bamba also gives the Magic their center of the future and allows them to likely move on from Nikola Vucevic either before the season, or around the trading deadline.
