NBA Mock Draft Pick #19 — De’Anthony Melton, Guard, USC
SB Nation’s Atlanta Hawks blog Peachtree Hoops explains the pick:
With a new, defense-first coaching staff led by Lloyd Pierce, the Hawks add another player that fits the bill perfectly. At No. 3, Jaren Jackson Jr. is the modern day picture of what a big man prospect can do on both ends and, while Melton isn’t quite as off-the-charts, he has a lot of intriguing qualities. Defensively, he is a versatile and talented player, with the length and strength to defend wings and the quickness to defend point guards at a high level. Offensively, Melton must improve his jump shot to reach his considerable ceiling, but he is comfortable with the ball in his hands as a combo guard and has the feel of a player that can make others better. With the uncertainty surrounding Dennis Schröder, it doesn’t hurt to have another capable ball-handler and creator and Melton brings that, with a ton of defensive and overall potential to justify this draft position.
