A draft plan for the cavs that would never happen unless I was GM
I would like to start this by saying that I am a Celtics fan, but I live in Columbus so I have a pretty good feel for the cavs team and the fan base.
Pre draft trades:
1. Trade JJ Hickson and Ramon Sessions to the Bobcats for number 9, plus Matt Carroll and Garrett Temple to make the salary math work. ( not sure if this would actually work, but what the hell it's my fan post).
2. Trade Anthony Parker and use the trade exception from LeBron for Richard Hamiltion and the number 8 pick.
3. Attempt to buy an early or mid second round pick (let's say number 41 from the Lakers)
Without further ado, I present my draft plan:
pick number 1 (1): Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke
pick number 2 (4): Enes Kanter, C, Turkey
pick number 3 (8) Tristan Thompson, PF, Texas
pick number 4 (9) Alec Burks, SG, Colorado
pick number 5 (32) Jeremy Tyler, PF/C, China
pick number 6 (41) Kyle Singler, SF, Duke
pick number 7 (54) David Lighty, SG/SF, OSU
let me know what everyone thinks, I want some opinions on this.

Maybe the attempt to make these trades would occur if you were the GM
I doubt the GM on the other phone will do anything more than laugh and then prank call you when he’s drunk

That being said, if a team could pull something like this off it would be interesting to see how the team works out 3-5 years down the road.
Do the picks bust? Do they all turn out to be studs? Somewhere in the middle? You’re tying the entire future of the team into 1 draft, and a draft where after the top 3 or so there are a lot of question marks.

There's a chance.
I think if the Cavs get the 8th pick, they shouldn’t do 4+8 for 2.
And I honestly think that the Bobcats could easily be befuddled in a trade like that. If there is anything MJ is not good at, it’s what he’s doing for the Bobcats. He gave away Gerald Wallace, and the Bobcats are going in the wrong direction.

Plus, that is a hell of a lot of youth, I don't know if that's good. And if the Cavs do trade Hickson (unadvisable)
they take Williams at 1 and Kemba at 4. Then go Burks and a project like Motiejunas

Cant trade Parker
RIP trade most likely wont happen because only way it would happen is if he agrees to a buyout before hand, which he wouldn’t at trade deadline.
Also would not want that many rookies, mainly because I am pretty sure that we don’t enough roster space.
finally i would want more than a #9 for a JJ and Sessions trade

crap I forgot parker is an expiring contract
but after cuts and all of the trades this is what the roster would look like:
PG: Irving, Davis, Gibson
SG: Burks, Lighty, Harris
SF: Eyenga, Gee, Singler
PF: Thompson, Varejao, Tyler
C: Kanter, Hollins, and random veteran free agent or Erden

I like it but i would tweak a bit
I like Noguiera more than Tyler(tyler better now Noguiera has a higher ceiling 2ish years)
I dont think we should stockpile picks this year.
I say stay with the picks we got plus one more mid first for Brooks
PG: Irving(#1), Davis, (Combo Guard)(Undrafted)
SG: Brooks(#10-16), Lighty(#54)
SF: Eyenga, Gee, Graham
PF: Hickson, Samuels, Harangody
C: Varejao, Kanter(#4), Hollins
D-league or Brazil Noguiera(#32)
Next Season:
Trade picks, Davis(expiring contract is valuable), Gee(good young player) and Varejao(playoff team will like him and more valuable after a full season playing) to get best SG and SF we can
PG: Irving, combo guard
SG: DRAFT, Brooks, Lighty
SF: DRAFT, Eyanga, DRAFT
PF: Hickson, Samuels, Harangody
C: Kanter, Noguiera, Hollins

This strategy makes little sense any year but especially in this year, when the uncertainty with these players is quite high. I don’t think the veterans (Jamison, Davis, etc) would look to kindly on this strategy, either.

really the only value that you are getting rid of is Hickson and Sessions
Jamison and Davis don’t fit into the teams long term plans and likely would not be happy next season anyway.

I wanted to put a European player that most likely won't come over for a year or two instead of Singler, but I wasn't sure who to put so I just kept in Singler

I just think that in this case you have too much youth.
A team with a whole starting lineup of rookies will struggle big.

This is too risky in real life
But I routinely tried this stuff in NBA 2k11 when I was playing it.

Yeah, in "The Association"
I frequently stockpiled first rounders into the future. One year I had 18 first rounders (including 1,2,4,5,6,8,and 9). I traded 6 and 9 for 3 and replaced my whole starting lineup and got a 6th man.
The best part about it is that you get good players without crippling your salary cap.

Interesting idea, but as many have said I don’t think this is the best draft for that.

Elgin, is that you?
seriously, i see that you would try to rebuild the Cavs if you were the GM. but even if all the moves you mentioned were made i doubt that it would make the Cavs a better team in the short or long term.
i’m not so sure the Cavs want to part with Hickson. he’s young and athletic and hasn’t reached his ceiling yet, plus his salary is affordable. i know it would be a trade chip to dump Session’s salary, but i think the whole plan doesn’t work out as long as you can’t dump Baron Davis’ contract.
as for the trade exception, i have no clue what they plan to do with it. i think it expires after one year (July 11th 2011, looked it up), so maybe they do nothing with it.
if i was the GM i would keep the #1 and #4 pick and build a team around Varejo, Hickson, Irving and the #4 overall pick. i would try hard to trade away Davis and Jamison’s expiring contract and get a solid rotation guy and unprotected 2012 picks in return.

this is for laugh's as I would not foist this on teh SUNS but...
trade Baron Davis for a contract like Vince Carter and give them Hickson for cost of taking on Davis’s contract.

Blech.
We already had to suffer through a season with a player who doesn’t give a crap. I’d rather not re-live that, especially because we can pay VC $4 mil to GTHO.

trade
bobcats don’t want or need JJ or Ramon they both suck!
by Heat on Jun 6, 2025 5:54 PM EDT reply actions
Bobcats
People under estimate Jordan and his management skills, he is more dedicated to making a winner now that he is the owner. He will change the name to Flight and make a winner out of this team just wait and see. As for Wallace he was getting older and we needed to get some value while we could watch him next year when he comes off the bench and see his game decline. The Bobcats will take Kemba Walker and move Augusta to the SG which he is more suited too.

That might be the tiniest backcourt the league has ever seen.
The Warriors wouldn’t even try to play those 2 together.

so true
but, as we know, it’s always been a good idea to play your 6’0’’ point guard at the SG position, where he can try to get his shot off against players who are mostly 6’3’’ to 6’6’’. and it sure helps that he shot 33% from downtown last season and averages 3.2 3PA for his career.
i agree that the Cats should grab Walker if he falls that far, but i don’t see him falling past #7. btw, i think MJ (my fav player all-time, since i’m a die-hard Bulls fan) sucks as the man in charge for a franchise as long as he doesn’t prove me wrong.
As for Wallace he was getting older and we needed to get some value while we could watch him next year when he comes off the bench and see his game decline.
maybe it will decline (his stats will definately, since he doesn’t have to carry a team alone anymore), but you may very well watch him playing for a playoff contender next year. and i don’t think he is already past his prime, guy’s 28 years old…

explanations of each pick:
Irving: Franchise PG, that’s pretty much all the explanation needed
Kanter: potential franchise Center to pair with a franchise PG
Thompson: great Defensive player, and the best offensive rebounder in the class, at the worst he will be a fantastic rotation player
Burks: best SG in the class, an athletic scorer to help take the load of off Kanter and Irving as scorers.
Tyler: he has huge upside, athletic and can potentially run an awesome fast break with Irving and Burks. He can ride the pine and learn the game untill they can unload Jamison or Varejao
Singler: wanted to put an international player here so they can have some talent to bring over in a few years, but Singler was considered a potential lottery pick last year, and you could do worse in the 2nd round.
Lighty: He is going to be a do it all guy off the bench, and he can play some good defense and play SG and SF. He won’t score a ton, but he will grab some rebounds and set his team up for some easy buckets, while playing solid D.

If I were the Cavs, I'd be pushing for that 8 pick.
But if I got it, I’d stop there. I’d take Derrick WIlliams, Kemba, and Burks. That right there is a solid core along with Hickson. Then you would just need a Center, which presumably could come in the Second round or FA.
I think having 7 Rookies is just a little bit too much. I think 4 would be ideal. Don’t buy a second rounder, I’d argue that they should sell one (assuming they get pick 8).
Then you go:
PG: Kemba, Davis, Gibson (Sessions gets traded)
SG: Burks, Harris, Eyenga
SF: Williams, Gee, FA
PF: Hickson, Varejao, FA
C: Hollins, Vucevic (predicted #32 pick), Erden
Seems good to me. You have 3 Dynamic scorers in Kemba, Burks, and Williams, a few good rebounders in HIckson and Varejao, and a super-sixth man type in Eyenga. The only Black hole becomes Center, but I like Hollins as at least a backup, and between Erden and Vucevic, at least one should develop into a decent C IMO.
