The fact that the D-League holds open tryouts is one of many, many things that confirms how unique this league is. There aren't many opportunities out there for relatively unknown players to show their talents in front of D-League, as well as NBA, executives and scouts. The majority of the tryouts cost a mere $150 for registration, unless you show up on the day of the camp to register, then it runs $200.

The only tryout sessions that have different registration fees are the two that the Grand Rapids Drive will host and their fees are $100 if you register beforehand and $125 at the door.

The thing about local tryouts is the teams already have a player in mind, hence the invited players.

What's more, for reference purposes, former NBA player Tim Ohlbrecht (currently playing overseas) is among those D-League alumni to have broken through via the open tryout process over the years.
