NBA Pre-Draft Workouts (June 16th): Who Is Your Favorite Player Working Out Today?
With the NBA Draft just barely a week away, I figured today might be a good time to begin a new feature - who's your favorite?
The rules? He doesn't have to be the best talent or the best teammate or even the player that most reminds you of the greatest player never to be drafted (Luke Schenscher) - just leave a message in the comments* on which player is your favorite with a brief explanation (unless AK1984 is still lurking around these parts - his explanation can be as long as it needs to be).
Today's candidates, at least those that were made public (or those that I found out about via my rolodex of vast NBA contacts Google) are available after the jump.
*and yes I realize this will fail miserably because nobody aside from my internet friends ever comment, but I figured I'd give it a try.
In Atlanta, we've got Alabama's Mikhail Torrance, Xavier's Jordan Crawford, Purdue's Chris Kramer, Missouri's J.T. Tiller and the immortal Maryland alum General Greivis Vasquez all working out for the Hawks. My favorite from that group? Mikhail Torrance - mostly because he hates combo guards.
The Indiana Pacers are working out Oklahoma's Willie Warren, Ohio's Armon Bassett, Baylor's Tweety Carter and Arizona's Nic Wise. My favorite? Tweety Carter, based solely on his name.
There are also a few players walking in Memphis to work out for the Grizzlies today! Maybe. Baylor's Ekpe Udoh, VCU's Larry Sanders, the D-League's very own Latavious Williams, Montana's (represent!) Anthony Johnson and Guilford's Tyler Sanborn were all scheduled to attend (but Udoh has already pulled out and there are other players, according to internet reports, thatare also scheduled to workout elsewhere). Obviously, I like Latavious WIlliams here.
Workouts in Milwaukee are scheduled to feature Ole Miss's Terrico White, Oklahoma State's James Anderson, Butler's Gordon Hayward, Marquette's Lazar Hayward, New Mexico's Darington Hobson and Texas senior Damion James in front of the Bucks' brass. Damion James gets the nod here from me - he just seems like a guy I'd want on my team.
The Minnesota Timberwolves plan to workout Florida State's Solomon Alabi, Minnesota's Damian Johnson, Tulsa's Jerome Jordan, Kentucky's Daniel Orton, Russia's Artem Zabelin and Duke's Brian Zoubek. Jerome Jordan is my favorite from this group - don't sleep on the big fella.
New Jersey will have another big workout today with Nevada's Armon Johnson, Montana's Anthony Johnson (notice he was also scheduled to be in Memphis so we'll see what happens), Serbia's Marko Keselj, Bowie State's Duke Crews (formerly of Tennessee), Notre Dame's Tory Jackson, Louisville's Edgar Sosa, Baylor's Ekpe Udoh (another Memphis castoff) and Georgetown's Greg Monroe. I'm giving the edge to Greg Monroe in this one, not because he's my favorite of the group but because I'm pretty intrigued as to what he's doing working out with the Nets - is he in the mix at third overall?

Nobody loves this more than me
Atlanta: (I’m torn) Chris Kramer - Purdue was my franchise in college hoops 2k7 (best game ever) and Chris’s last game as a senior was one of the saddest virtual days of my life.
Indiana: Tweety Carter - Love Baylor, Tweety’s been my boy for years.
Memphis: Larry Sanders no question. Length, ups, D, played with Eric Maynor for years…one of my favorite guys to follow when I check the box scores at night.
Milwaukee: Despite my recent infatuation with Lazar, I gotta go with DJ here because I have actually been in love with him since his freshman year when KD and Augustin were hogging the spotlight. If he left as a sophomore he’s a top 10 pick.
Minnesota: Jerome Jordan - another one of my box score guys, I dig the alliteration as well as the upside for the Tulsa kid. And I mostly want to murder Brian Zoubek with my hands.
New Jersey: This is also a toughie, but I’m gonna go with Tory Jackson. When he was a freshman on that team with Colin Falls, Russell Carter, Rob Kurz, Kyle McAlarney, and fellow freshman Luke whatshisgody, I fell headfirst for the kid, cornea abrasion and all.
Thank you for this Scott, and I hope I’m included in your internet friends crew. Almost as good as America’s Best Dance Crew. And better dancers, anyhow.

Notes
First, don’t refer to “DJ” when you also mention Augustin in the same sentence. It confuses me.
For some reason I really like Jerome Jordan, but I warn you Aisander D’s going to be pissed you hate his boiii Zoubek.
That’s an awesome non-NBA Notre Dame team. They’ll all have played in the D-League by next season (except Colin Falls, who is currently working as an investment banker somewhere… or something - definitely not playing basketball).
You’re definitely part of my ABDC crew - we’re like the Jabbawockeez.

I love Colin Falls and Russell Carter so much, I have pics of them together all over my cubicle. Or I would, if I had a cubicle.
Let’s make RUABDC happen now

all self -respecting baskeball fans hate Zoubek.
In addition to the Baylor boys, I also had the unfortunate luck (barf) of watching him play in the NCAA South Regional this year and I can tell you from personal up-close knowledge that Zoubek is horrible. Dude totally almost killed that kid Kramer from Purdue.
I don’t know if ya’ll watch a ton of college basketball or not, but if you do, you may remember the incident to which I am referring. Zoubek set an incredibly nasty and what looked to be downright dirty screen on the kid. So uncalled for.
So, that coupled with his constant incredibly loathsome hand-clapping (and I’m sure there are other irritating Zoubek-isms that I’m forgetting here, but you get the idea), well that just equates to so much annoyance that I can’t really overlook it.
I suppose he could be a really nice and decent human being, but to be truthful I just don’t see it and I don’t really want to, either. So, yes, Zoubek gets an F from me, as well — for failing at being the least bit likable.

Among this list, I have to go with Orton.
First off, he’s working out in Minnesota despite the fact that his own teammate’s agent (Greig, Cousins’ contract rep) has held DeMarcus out on the grounds that there are too many bigs on the Wolves’ roster. Anything that gives me cognitive dissonance is a good thing.
But the guy’s a big who declared despite little NCAA playing time, and he’s eloquent and seems like a good egg. If he makes a 6-year NBA career that may be something of an outlier…. Or maybe he’s just made of awesomeness. Or maybe he’s Chris Richard.

Oop! I'd better get my terminology down, then.
Does that make this the D-Bleague? The D-Blog?
(We are special. We’re unique, just like everyone else. And I’ve glanced over here off and on since Thabeet’s Bismarck stretch, so there’s at least a little evidence behind that assertion.)

Hey,
Just so you know, even though I don’t comment every day, I do read your loveliness every day, and besides, the majority of all blogs are perused by way more people who just read than comment and furthermore, people are much more inclined to comment when they disagree than when they agree. So, don’t be too hard on yourself about the lack of comments and in order to make yourself feel better, I think you can safely assume that the lack of comments is an indication that people just agree and that you are a wonderful writer. : ) — (if you are even serious about the "sad about no comments" thing?)
To be a good sport and play this fun game, and since I’m a UK fan and all, I guess I too should probably go with Orton. Early on in the season he was definitely a UK fan favorite, I think he has a great NBA body already, very fit and all that, and well, a prospects body is certainly one of his best commodities, but some things did come to light in the last few months that made many of us UK fans back off on giving him totally unabashed high praise.
I won’t go into it here because he wore the blue-and-white and I will never intentionally say something totally negative about one of "my" boys, but I will say that the issues I have with Daniel are more personality-wise than skill-wise, so there is that. And, I will go on to say that I think he has some skill, certainly, and if not for DeMarcus (who is my overall, outright favorite ‘Cat and person in this year’s draft, but sadly not on today’s list) he probably would have started for us last year and his numbers would have been more indicative of a first rounder. I really do hope he goes in the first round. It would be good for him and also good for the University of Kentucky.
Also, I was at the NCAA South Regional in Houston this year and I can say with clarity that Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh and Tweety Carter are also awesome. I really loved watching them play and I hope they both do well in the draft, as well.
Whew. That reply got a little long, didn’t it? Well, you asked for it, I guess. Keep up the good work. Very excited for draft night.

Thanks for the comment
I usually just like to guilt people into commenting - it’s more fun to do this when you know people are reading, you know?
That said, good insight on everything - I’d be surprised if Orton falls out of the first round (unless the knee problems are serious?).

Tell me about those Orton interview comments where he talked DeMarcus down a bit.
I’d love my Woofs to draft Cousins at 4 if they’re still there come next Thursday, but apparently the “He makes scowly faces” character card is in play.

Yeah, I’m still kinda pissed about that to tell you the truth.
I don’t expect teammates to cover for one another, per se, but I would have loved for Daniel to have tried to promote himself a little more as opposed to demoting DeMarcus. But, so it goes, I guess and that is one of the issues I have with Daniel, who unlike to DeMarcus, it appears that the word teammate meant little or nothing to.
DeMarcus has been fighting the mantra that he has attitude issues since he was like a sophomore in high school. The kid isn’t evil, he isn’t mean. He’s just misunderstood and a tad on the goofy side.
As far as his flags about attitude and temper, all I will say is this — DeMarcus got a lot worse than he gave last year and the most publicized incident (the Louisville/Swopshire thing) that suggested he had a supposed temper was totally and completely provoked by Swopshire, IMO.
I see DeMarcus as someone who cares too much rather than too little, someone who is full of such remarkable talent, plays the game with such intense passion, energy and heart, and who just so happens to have more personality in his little finger than a lot of people have in their entire body. If you take away the fire inside him you also run the risk of taking away the talent, too, as I think that one feeds the other, and I sure as hell don’t want that. He’s perfect just the way he is, thank you, and if your woofs (that’s cute, btw) do end up drafting him I will most certainly be coming over and introducing myself to your blog and your fans on his behalf. : )

Thanks. Actually I may link across to this comment....
There are definitely pro- and anti-DMC factions on Canishoopus, and people don’t know what to think.
Early on I went and dug through all the various clips and articles. Half of the youtube stuff is like those grainy Bigfoot tapes from 1975, with Cousins as the sasquatch you can’t quite see supposedly punching the Louisville fan. There isn’t any direct evidence that he’s somehow flaming out, but there’s a lot of “Hot Echo,” if you know what I mean.
To me he seems like a sort of shy Charles Barkley in interviews, if anything. One side of which is that my B.S. meter doesn’t go off when he’s answering something, even if he answers clumsily.

link away. : )
I’m not sure if you’ve seen this one or not, but this is the angle that CBS didn’t show.
I realize opinions vary on players and such and I will be the first to say, to each their own, but a knee to the head is definitely provocation in my book. I think it’s also fairly important to note that that incident was very early on in the season. Things were so new to DeMarcus then, he was just getting used to the college game and he probably didn’t know any better than to try and defend himself.
Seriously, I think the kid just wants to be loved, welcomed and accepted without qualification. We did that at UK and he became a fan favorite. If you do the same, you will get the same — all he has to give.
I guess this thread kinda got hijacked, didn’t it? If it was me that did it, well, I sincerely apologize. : )

This was the plan (kind of).
It’d make more sense if Cousins had a workout today, but he’s probably somewhere working out with a trainer anyway - so we’ll count it.

Looking at the workouts, and who I like for each (though not necessarily for that particular team, if that makes sense):
Atlanta: Torrance
Indiana: Warren
Memphis: Williams
Milwaukee: Hayward. Or Hayward. Whichever.
Minnesota: Urk. None of the above?
New Jersey: Crews. Gotta love the name.

Duke Crews
I am surprised that he was invited to a pre-draft workout. I thought the Wizards would be the only team that might give him a look and that’s only because he is somewhat of a local product. Crews wasn’t even the best player in his Division II conference (CIAA). I guess his agent is well connected.

He was the 26th best player in his high school class according to Rivals, though, so maybe there’s that.
