Orlando Magic Draft Greivis Vasquez With 29th Pick In SB Nation's 2010 NBA Mock Draft
The 2010 SB Nation NBA Mock Draft is still(!) underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Ben Q Rock from Orlando Pinstriped Post, SB Nation's Orlando Magic blog, checks in to make the second-to-last first round selection in this year's mock.
With the twenty-ninth overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NBA Mock Draft, the Orlando Magic will select Greivis Vasquez, point guard, Maryland Terrapins.
BQR explains: I investigated Vasquez's strengths and weaknesses, and how they relate to the Magic, in greater detail in this post.
Essentially, Vasquez fits the Magic's biggest positional need--Jameer Nelson is the only point guard the Magic have under contract for next season--and has the skills to be a good fit. Sure, there are red flags, such as the turnovers, lackluster individual defense, and prior track record of tall point guards in the NBA. However, Vasquez's ability to run an offense seems genuine, and interesting. Additionally, his willingness to take big shots could be a plus, especially with an expert coach like Stan Van Gundy on hand to help his at-times iffy shot-selection in those situations.
Though I prefer Quincy Pondexter in this spot, he's off the board. Yet Vasquez is not a terrible consolation prize. He has a chance to make a solid, immediate contribution to the Magic.
Ridiculous Upside reacts: Point guard is the biggest (only?) need for the Magic and Vasquez has plenty of experience running a team. Solid pick.
Ridiculous Upside's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Daniel Orton, C, Kentucky. 2 - Stanley Robinson, F, Connecticut. 3 - Dominique Jones, G, South Florida. 4 - Elliot Williams, G, Memphis. 5 - Darington Hobson, F, New Mexico.
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Vasquez-to-Orlando pick?
And please, remember to check out Orlando Pinstriped Post for everything you need to know about the Magic.

I have major doubts
That he will be able to defend anyone in the NBA. He is just not quick enough to stay in front of anyone.

To play devil's advocate, that's probably less harmful on Orlando than most other teams
The “funnel defense” of guiding people towards Howard/Gortat doesn’t require quick PGs. So long as he can keep on their hip, that should be quick enough for SVG’s brand of play.
Honor is no substitute for victory.

Good point
But if he gets beat every time off the dribble, he is only going to put those two in positions to foul often. If he gets beat every know and then it is no big deal but to be getting beat consistently makes you a liability and I do not think his offense will be strong enough to warrant serious minutes (even on the second team)

Would you (and this is a generic you, not just JoshuaR) consider him an upgrade on Jason Williams and Anthony Johnson?
That’s who the Magic have had as their back-up PGs the last two seasons.

If you is me, not over Jason Williams. I’d try to keep Williams and still draft someone to develop.

And I’ll agree with BlaseE. I don’t know if I’m positive Williams is still better than Vasquez could be this season, but I’d keep him around anyway.
I write about basketball players with Ridiculous Upside. I know you'll love it.

Good pick at #29............
Tony Parker was selected at #28 pick in 2001; so why not Vazquez at # 29? Probably this will be the perfect pick for the Magic like Parker was for San Antonio, He also will help the Magic with the hispanic community in the Orlando area; we need an hispanic player ( for marketing purposes) in the Magic roster and Vazquez could fit perfectly in that regard the guy have the charisma and look to be marketed. Also with the #59 pick the Magic could select Brian Zoubek from Duke this guy is big, tought, smart and never hurt to have a couple of big guys in the bench………..GO MAGIC.

It sucks when you draft 29th and your biggest need is the position the draft is the weakest in.
I think it is a good pick. I give it a B.
