NBA Mock Draft: Boston Celtics Select Domantas Sabonis From Gonzaga

New, 6 comments

SB Nation's NBA Network conducted a mock draft with bloggers from each team site making or trading "their" team's pick. We continue with the next pick in the 2016 NBA Mock Draft, with Celtics Blog discussing their selection of Domantas Sabonis.

NBA Mock Draft Pick #16 -- Domantas Sabonis, Power Forward, Gonzaga

SBNation's Boston Celtics blog, Celtics Blog, explains their pick:

Anticipating the loss of Jared Sullinger (and perhaps Tyler Zeller) to free agency, we have a need for a big guy that can gobble up rebounds and bang with the bigger bodies down low. He also has a potentially great fit as a pick and roll or pick and pop option in the offense. We like his energy and passing and can see him playing rotation minutes immediately.

Ridiculous Upside analysis: After trading the #3 pick to get Gordon Hayward, the Boston Celtics are still able to get a solid player in Domantas Sabonis. Aside from maybe Henry Ellenson, Sabonis is the most versatile offensive big in this year's draft, as he can contribute in a variety of ways: post-ups, offensive rebounds, off-ball cuts and a developing outside jumper. While he isn't the most athletic player and could have some troubles on defense, Domantas Sabonis should still fit right into Brad Stevens' front-court rotation.
