Which players find themselves in the best situation?
Several NBA sites and blogs already posted their draft grades, but i was thinking about the player's perspective. Who found himself in the best situation? Here are my thoughts:
- Luke Harangody: OK, he is a second rounder and won't be guarenteed a contract. But i have no doubts that the Celtics will acutally sign him since they will have holes in their frontcourt. Luke Harangody finds himself a situation where not much will be expected from him. He has shown hustle mentality and could provide instant energy off the bench. He will be a role player at best, but he will have the opportunity to learn from a group of experienced champions and one of the best big guys of the last decade, KG.
- Dominique Jones: The Mavs needed a scoring SG, and they found a perfect fit in the USF product. He is not considered a sharp shooter, but if he can add this aspect to his game, he will become a deadly offensive weapon. He is ultra-athletic and won't feel too much pressure on him coming into the season. He should provide scoring from day 1, i expect him to be part of the 10+ PPG rookie group.
- Greg Monroe: It's his playing style that fits very well with this team. He very often plays on the high post and should be able to lure defenders away from the shooters (Hamilton, Gordon). His passing skills will help him playing with Stuckey, who will likely see his free throw attempts rising since he will now be able to get the pass and penetrate. Monroe won't be the highest scoring or rebounding rookie Center, but he will make his teammates better and help the Pistons win games.
- Daniel Orton: He was lucky because of two aspects: he didn't slip into the 2nd round, and he landed on a team where he can improve within the next years. He received a lot of criticism because he left school too early and because of his pre-draft behaviour. But late in the first round the risk isn't too high for the Magic, who don't have a positional need for a player like Orton as of now. That means, he won't be asked too much in NBA games in his rookie season and he can learn from one of the best athletes in the league, Dwight Howard. The fact that he landed on a team with a great coaching staff is also a big plus for him. Expect him to grow as a player the next few years.
- Wesley Johnson: The Wolves were 29th in offensive rating last season (okay, they were also 28th in defensive rating), and when you take a look at the roster you'll see that they don't have a big time scorer. Their best scoring wing is Corey Brewer at 13 PPG. It is no secret that Wes Johnson will be asked to carry a huge amount of offense. And that is exactly what he was asked at Syracuse. With Johnson the Wolves also add a weapon from the perimiter which will help Love and Jefferson (if they both stay) get more room inside. It won't shock me if Johnson becomes the best scorer in this rookie class.
- Ed Davis and Solomon Alabi: They both fit a positional need in Toronto (assuming that Bosh leaves) and will both see some playing time. Davis should be a rotation player at least, maybe even a starter. Alabi is a true Center (not like Bargniani, who i see more like a big shooting SF) who also hits his free throws (80 %). Both give the Raptors frontcourt a totally different look it should be interesting how they perform, especially with the Raptors roster in flux.
As you might have noticed, i left off players like Wall, Turner, Favors, Cousins, and a bunch of other guys.
As for Wall and Turner, i think they will both fit well, i just don't think it is a perfect fit because both will have to deal with players on their teams who demand the ball (Arenas, Igoudala).
Favors on the Nets should work too, but i'm a bit concerned that this young guy will be asked too much in his rookie season.
Cousins on the Kings i'm not so sure about. They have 3 centers now who are all not known for their outstanding work ethic (Dalembert, Whiteside, Cousins). It remains to be seen if the coaching staff can get them to work constantly on their weaknesses.
