SBNation Mock Draft, Pick #2: Memphis Grizzlies

With the second pick in the SBNation Mock Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies, represented by 3 Shades Of Blue of the Bloguin Network (SBN is SOL for Grizzlies bloggers), select... (Drum Roll please)

Draft_2009_numero_ricky_rubio_medium

Ricky Rubio: Point Guard, DKV Joventut. 6-4, 180 lbs.

From 3SOB: Ricky Rubio is the intelligent pick even if he doesn't remain in Memphis. Trades are already being discussed by the Grizzlies and there is a high probability that if Rubio is drafted by Memphis he won't remain in Memphis overnight.

I understand Rubio is considered the #2 guy...

though I’m not quite sure why.

Given that the Grizz already have Conley, wouldn’t it be better to draft for need and grab someone like Thabeet or Harden or Hill (depending on need)?

Never draft for need. Take the best player available and use free agency or trades to fill in for need. Memphis would be foolish to take a less talented prospect at the #2 spot. That is how mistakes like Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan get made.

But that's only true if there is a true #2 guy

why is Rubio considered the #2 guy right now?

Why Rubio is #2

He’s 6-4 in his socks, he has the court vision of a Magic Johnson, plays defense like Chauncey Billups and has the flair of Pete Maravich. For a team desperate to find a player that will excite the home fans do you seriously wonder why the reigning ACB Defensive Player of the Year and 1st team All-ACB player not to mention youngest player in the draft is the conscensus #2 pick?
