For Rod Benson, Does the NBA = No Blogging Allowed?
Rod Benson, via Twitter:
Campin w Indiana. This will be my final tweet for a while. You can hit me on facebook, but no blogs or tweets. Old stuff wont be up either.
After reading posts here in the past, it was always questioned if Rod could make a serious run at the NBA and still do the personal blogging and twittering thing. I guess this kind of answers it.
Since he took down everything on Too Much Rod Benson, I'm assuming this was a mandate from the Pacers and not something Benson decided to do on his own.
Now, I'm not sure why he'd go to camp with the Pacers anyway since they have Jeff Foster, Tyler Hansbrough, Roy Hibbert, Solomon Jones, Josh McRoberts and Troy Murphy already signed to guaranteed deals, but if they also said he can't blog and tweet, it makes it all the more confusing.
We all know Benson's D-League accolades, or we should by now - basically, he's proven all he can in the D-League. I mean, per 36 minutes, he's averaged 14.9 points, 11.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. You'd think that'd at least be worth an NBA look.
So really, I think this will decide it: Either Benson's blogging is the reason he hasn't earned that NBA job yet and he'll catch on with the Pacers or another team after the preseason, or his game just isn't suited for the NBA level.
I'm leaning toward the former. What do you think?

They may have guaranteed deals
but I’d certainly hope that Benson could beat out McRoberts and Jones. Plus as I mentioned in the fanshot, Hansbrough has some kind of chronic or recurring shin thing and Murphy has a habit of getting banged up. So I’m optimistic about his chances (but then I’m optimistic about everyone’s chances).
As for Benson quitting Twitter, it’s disappointing but not totally surprising. With all the incidents related to NBA players and Twitter that have happened this off-season, there was bound to be at least one team that overreacted. Boom Tho’s Twitterings and website posts were a far, far cry from whatever J.R. Smith and Michael Beasley were doing (or not doing), but a team with a history of players involved in off-court incidents like Indiana probably developed something akin to a zero-tolerance policy about this stuff, likely because they don’t fully “get it.”
It’s unfortunate, but if it gets someone like Benson a training camp invite and/or increases his chances to make a team, I can live with it.

Pacers have their players do regular blogs for their official site. Last one I read Dunleavy jr dissed Star Trek or Star Wars nerds.

Rod Benson
James: Rod had four camp invitations. Indiana was the most attractive because of the injuries they have, the system they play and their trip to China. The others were the Clippers, the Bucks and the Suns. All will be very difficult to make. As I have said on this site before, the NBA does not respect the D League as they should and use it properly. So, no matter how good you and I think Rod is, instead of mining the League for talents like Rod, the D League is an afterthought to most NBA teams. They see it as a cost which to me is an unfortunate waste of time and money and thus, do not see Rod as ready as you and I do as D League players are perceived differently. So, he is there not necessarily to make this team which has 15 guarantees but to show his stuff for others. Indiana offered the best opportunity to do that. Thanks for the interest.

Safety vs. Entertainment
My guess is that the Pacers told him to do no such thing - but if you are in Roderick’s Ponies what would you do? Keep on keeping on or eliminate the one potential items that is in your control that seems to be turning the NBA off on having you join their party.
Of course, for us fans it sucks. But if I were a boss or an owner, I am not sure I would want my employees “twittering.” Sure I won’t say or demand that - but I sure can encourage it. If you don’t believe me so, read FlashBrandt’s blog - for all his “short comings” as an owner, he is a tech progressive as anyone and he gives athletes blog/twitter the Mutumbo finger wag. And unfortunately, he is correct on this.
I just hope the damage has not been done. People that board like Rod deserve a shot.
Speaking of electronic communication gone awry, the only Italian I speak is pizza but I think that our old pal Lance Allred got himself in all sorts of hot water with his Italian team with his blog musings. Suspended even him I think…
Say “yes” to boards and “no” to keyboards.
