New, 8 comments

SB Nation's NBA Network conducted a mock draft with bloggers from each team site making or trading "their" team's pick. We continue with the next pick in the 2014 NBA Mock Draft with At the Hive selecting forward Doug McDermott from Creighton.

NBA Mock Draft Pick #10 -- Doug McDermott, Forward, Creighton

SB Nation's Hornets blog At the Hive explains the pick:

This is not the most risky pick but it's not a safe one, really. Doug McDermott offers offense the Hornets could really use, however. Of course his shooting is the clear draw for the Hornets, a team that lacked decent shooting for much of last season before finding sparks from Chris Douglas-Roberts, Anthony Tolliver and Gary Neal off the bench. With Josh McRoberts opting out to be a free agent, the Hornets could possibly lose another of their best shooters and will desperately need more help. McDermott should fill that shooting gap pretty well from the get-go thanks to a great repeatable and mechanic jump shot.

Despite those deficiencies, he's an active defender capable of working in Clifford's defensive scheme. He's no Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on defense, but he understands ball movement and where he needs to be. In this way, he could be a good fit for the Hornets on either side of the floor. His sharpshooting skills are perfect as a release valve with Al Jefferson in the post, and he could work well next to Kidd-Gilchrist in some rotations. The spacing he could bring the Hornets is a major noon for them.

He also is fairly good in other aspects of offense with decent footwork, a nice fadeaway and a high basketball IQ (making extra passes, etc).

His lack of athleticism poses a pretty serious risk as it could limit his ability to finish at the rim on offense, and prevent him from being an effective defender against quicker small forwards when playing the 3.
