NBA Mock Draft Pick #23 -- Tyler Ulis, Point Guard, Kentucky
SBNation's Detroit Pistons blog, Detroit Bad Boys, explains their selection:
Stocking up on point guards might feel like a very Khan-y move, but it's no secret the Pistons want a better back up option than Steve Blake, especially after recently trading Spencer Dinwiddie to the Bulls.
By trading for hometown favorite Trey Burke and keeping a first round pick, this gives the Pistons the ability to have a small PG Death Match. No matter who rises to the top, these back up point guards will be better than what the Pistons had in 2015-2016. If Ulis is the pick at No. 18 (which we think he probably should be), then getting him at No. 23 with insurance is even better.
Ridiculous Upside analysis: Detroit's continued pursuit of smaller offensive-minded point guards continue with Tyler Ulis. The 5'9 Ulis stood as one of the best players in college hoops last year, averaging 17.3 points, 7.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game on 43% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc. Despite his small frame, Ulis established himself as a great cutter as he utilized his incredible basketball IQ and quickness to regularly get to the paint. That great basketball IQ is evident by Ulis maintaining a fantastic 3.54 Ast/TO ratio.
