SBNation Mock Draft, Pick #5: Washington Wizards

With the fifth pick in the SBNation Mock Draft, the Washington Wizards, represented by Mike Prada from Bullets Forever, select... (Drum Roll please)

From Bullets Forever: I guess I go with Thabeet. It's not the ideal situation, since the Wizards already have a young center prospect in JaVale McGee, but with all the top shooting guards off the board save for Stephen Curry, you can't pass up on Thabeet's size. Curry was strongly considered, but Thabeet's long-term defensive potential on a team that really struggles defensively without starter Brendan Haywood is too tough to pass on.

I dunno, don't got much more than that. I'm bummed that both Evans and Harden got picked.

Hasheem Thabeet: Center, UConn. 7-3, 265 lbs.

I know there aren't trades in this draft

But, if the draft falls like this, does anyone else think the Wiz should trade this pick? I think McGee could be better than Thabeet and no one else feels like the right fit at this point in the draft (outside of maybe Jordan Hill)

Yeah I don't like this pick either.

I like Thabeet. But there has got to be other Shooting Guards that the Wiz are interested in, right? Instead of replicating a player you already have, why not fill a need? That’s what I hate about the BPA discussion, if the BPA completely replicates something you already have, why go for it and try to make it work. This is how Kevin Durant plays SG part of his Rookie year (well that and bad coaching).

What you don't like PJ?

This mock draft is the reason why bloggers don't frequently become GMs

Except for maybe Scott, once he climes the corporate ladder. My qualms (yeah I said it) with this draft start with the second pick. The Griz traded Kyle Lowry and Javaris Crittenton away so Mike Conley can play the point. They also drafted OJ Mayo, who some have talked about running the point. I don’t see them addressing that area again at pick 2. Thabeet seems much more logical going to them, and lining up a front court with Gasol and Thabeet is pretty formidable to me.

For OKC, I understand the need of a shooting guard if you don’t love Thabo, but they have a pick at the end of the first to get a decent shooting guard in this draft, whereas PF-C is very weak. I think they’ll go Jordan Hill here because they’ve needed a big man since Shawn Kemp left (Seattle, that is). I love Harden, but another wing to go along with Durant and Green (and Sefolosha) doesn’t seem prudent at pick 3.

Tyreke Evans isn’t an NBA point guard. He’s not. So thank god Ricky Rubio is still there (should trades me made, he probably won’t be), because Sac-Town can get their point without going for a guy that will completely dominate the ball and leave Kevin Martin wide open scratching his ass. Plus it’s a huge reach for Evans here even at his natural SG position.

So this leaves the Wizards to pick PF Jordan Hill. His strength and beastliness would wonderfully compliment the developing offensive game of Javale McGee. Another center is superfluous, so grab the 4 and move ‘tawn to the 3 and Caron to the 2. You have a big, athletic team there with a blend of youth and experience. Makes more sense than 2 plus 7’0 centers.

But hey, solid job for Clips Nation. I like the pick. I feel like an English teacher editing a thesis paper. Except the thesis isn’t about Toni Morrison’s writing style complementing the racial inequalities in her work, rather how much RU the Wizards/Thunder/Kings have with their young lineups. WOOOOOOOO

TAFKAMB...I think we agree here

It feels like fans and teams are talking themselves into a BPA in a “weak” draft. I wish teams would just go ahead and shoot for the player they need, not covering their asses should the next Michael Jordan be floating around in this year’s pool.

The “best player available” philosophy only takes you so far. You can’t play the game with 4 wing players. And there’s role players laced throughout the draft (kinda like heroin), even to the end of round 2. I’m excited to see what happens….giddy, even.

You forgot the part about how Hill stinks

http://www.bulletsforever.com/2009/5/20/881813/so-whos-the-top-five-prospect-again

Anyway, I realize you feel differently about how things should have gone, but was it really necessary to crap on the bloggers who spend so much time following their teams?

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

He's more projectable in the pros than Blair is

Although it’s hard to say anything about how DB will play in the next level because of how rarely a guy like him comes along. I think Blair is the better player now, but Hill has more room to grow into a Carlos Boozer-type role.

And I don’t know if I crapped on any bloggers, maybe sprinkled some urine, but crapped seems to go a bit far. All I got is love for SBN bloggers, just a difference of opinion here.

Fair enough

We’ll have to see. It was just a bit annoying to read “no bloggers should be GMs” or something, but I realize I took it a little too personally.

My point is that Hill doesn’t impress me at all and he wasn’t even under my admittedly two-second consideration (I was just going to take whichever of Harden/Evans that dropped). The Wiz already have Jamison, Blatche, Songaila and maybe even McGee at PF. They don’t need another one unless it’s Chris Bosh.

I like Jamison better at the 3

And Blatche has underperformed his whole career. Songaila is a vagabond. I see McGee as a center, that’s why, for me, Hill fits in at the 4.

My argument against Jordan Hill to the Thunder is does he really offer that much more than Jeff Green to waste a top 5 pick on the guy? I don’t think so, they are similar size and build, and in my opinion Green is way more versatile. I don’t think either guy is the True answer for our team at Starting Power Forward.

In the end, if Thabeet is available it comes down to what Presti and his scouts think of him, if they feel like he will be the dominant defensive player some think he’ll become, he’ll be their pick. Other than that I really think they are looking to kill two birds with one stone by adding a shooting guard in Harden who also can help deliver some much needed outside shooting. Outside of those two guys, I think they are keeping their eye on trading down and maybe nabbing Stephen Curry because of his whicked shooting ability which paired with Durant…Green and Westbrook would just be insane offensively. I’m eager to see how they play it. I said it in another comment, but I’ll say it again here, In Sam Presti I trust.

Mr P, you have a competent GM

not everyone is so lucky. Just look at the Warriors and Clippers.

I agree.

I count my lucky stars each and every day that we have the Boy Genius working our deals. I hope they do whatever it takes to keep him in OKC longterm. Signing Presti longterm is arguably as, if not more important that signing Durant to a longterm deal. (in terms of longterm future)

I disagree

I like Green a lot, especially his versatility. And although Hill and Green may be similar in measurements, Hill plays strictly down low, and plays it tough. Green, to me, is a little soft. Not SOFT, but just a little soft. There’s a difference (in my head). Hill can bring ferocity and toughness on the boards to OKC, which is something Green can’t offer. I think Jeff is the better player, but when he plays the 4 on a weak rebounding team, his versatility is less important because he is forced to play a role that demands him to stay near the basket. Bringing in Hill can let Green wander outside and inside, especially playing the high post where all of his skills can be put on display. With Harden, I think you take away from what Green gives you.

However, you’ve undoubtedly seen more of Jeff Green than I have so if my thoughts are flawed, I’ll certainly defer to you.

Also

Harden is only an average outside shooter, which is why I like them going for Hill now. I have them taking Collison in their late 1st pick, but I wouldnt be surprised to see them reach a bit for Dionte Christmas or Marcus Thornton. If Budinger or Ellington fall (which they probably wont that far), they’d be steals that late.
